From September 2025, HyPEF entered an intensive six-month phase focused on testing and consolidating the project’s methodological work through concrete case study applications. One of the main milestones of this period was the delivery, in February 2026, of three reports on the application of the FCH-PEFCRs (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen – Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules) to electrolysers, hydrogen storage units and fuel cells.
These results were produced through the joint efforts of ADVENT, Ecoinnovazione, EIFER, ENEA, ENGIE, Hexagon Purus and IMDEA Energy, drawing on data obtained through collaboration with other European projects, such as GUESS-WHy, as well as from HyPEF industrial partners and scientific literature.
Welcome to HyPEF! We will deliver and test the FIRST EVER Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) for fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) products.

Applying the PEFCRs to real case studies made it possible to identify the life cycle stages, processes and flows contributing most significantly to the environmental footprint of the different systems. At the same time, these activities generated valuable feedback to support the further refinement of the rules within the project.
Alongside the case study work, HyPEF is also preparing the collected inventories for possible future implementation in the European Commission’s Life Cycle Data Network (LCDN), ensuring that the data are structured in the appropriate format.
